About

I currently manage the Grid Integration Systems and Mobility group at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, which is operated by Stanford University for the US Department of Energy. Before working at SLAC, I worked at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory starting in 1992 where I led the development of building energy modeling, control, and diagnostic systems, including Softdesk Energy and DOE’s Whole Building Diagnostician. I designed the Olympic Peninsula and Northeast Columbus retail real-time pricing systems. I managed the development of GridLAB-D™, an open source smart grid simulation built by PNNL for the US Department of Energy. I was a member of the Western Electricity Coordinating Council’s (WECC) Market Integration Committee and the North American Electricity Reliability Council (NERC) Load Forecasting Work Group. I contributed to the NERC Load Modeling Task Force development of the composite load model data for North American utilities and reliability coordinators.

My current research centers on buildings and electric power systems, with a special focus on modeling, simulation, and applications of peer-to-peer and transactive energy technology. I design and develop solutions for the control and dispatch of fast-acting demand response, distributed energy resource control, retail real-time resource dispatch using prices, and transactive control theory. I have been awarded 21 US patents in building energy system diagnostics, grid-friendly appliance controls and transactive control systems and I have published more than 150 articles, papers and technical reports.
